The Story

Grafted onto Macrophylla rootstock, these evergreen trees are hardy to –5°C and benefit from a sturdy foundation that promotes bushy growth, while keeping a compact, manageable size, perfect for pots, patios or conservatories. The trees stand approximately 50-70 cm tall (including pot) and will maintain a compact, bushy appearance.

Although they will tolerate some frost, these trees do best in a greenhouse or conservatory. During the warm summer months, container grown trees will enjoy a sunny, sheltered spot outside with shade from the hottest midday sun, but should be brought inside to protect them over the winter.

Citrus trees grow best in well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soils (pH 6.0–7.0). Alkaline or chalky conditions can cause the tree to experience nutrient deficiencies.

The branches have many tiny thorns, so care is required when handling, pruning and harvesting. Self-fertile, they produce white flowers in the spring with the fruits ripening towards the end of the year.

We are offering three varieties of Finger Lime trees this year, to add colour and flavour to your garden or patio: white, pink ice and red crystal.

Each variety produces small, cylindrical fruit that start off green and ripen to bronze in the autumn. Inside, the signature citrus “caviar” or “pearls” are bursting with tangy, lime-grapefruit flavour, while the vibrant colours of the fruit make an excellent topping to sushi, sashimi, canapés and work wonderfully well in desserts and cocktails.

  • Botanical name: Microcitrus australasica
  • Approximate total height: 70cm
  • Pot height: 20cm
