The Story

This bent cedarwood sake cup has a simple, elegant look and is made for both style and everyday use. Crafted from thin sheets of Akita cedar that are carefully steamed and bent into shape, it shows off the wood’s fine grain and natural scent, adding a subtle aroma that enhances the sake. The smooth curve of the cup feels comfortable in the hand, while its neat, compact size means it can be stacked easily for tidy storage or serving several guests.

This cup has been expertly handcrafted by Odate Kougeisha, a renowned workshop in ĹŚdate City, Akita Prefecture, dedicated to the traditional Japanese craft of magewappa, the centuries-old art of bentwood woodworking.

Magewappa began as a practical craft used by mountain monks and samurai, who made lightweight, durable containers to store rice and other supplies.

Founded in 1959, the Odate Kougeisha workshop continues a legacy that began over 1,300 years ago, using locally sourced Akita cedar, prized for its fine grain, subtle aroma and natural antibacterial properties. Each piece is made entirely by hand, without glue, using steam-bent cedar which is then then secured with cherry bark stitching or invisible joints to create items that are both durable and timeless.

Remaining faithful to traditional methods and preserving a craft officially recognised as a Traditional Japanese Art Form, their work reflects a quiet commitment to natural materials, functional beauty and Japanese design philosophy, where craftsmanship and simplicity go hand in hand.
